P003—Philippines Typhoon Relief
In December 2004, the Philippines were
hit by four “super” typhoons which caused
landslides and flooding leaving at least 1,500 dead
and survivors homeless. The C&MA churches
in the Philippines responded with practical help.
Here are excerpts from a recent report from dr. Jose
Dalino, president of CAMACOP (AWF’s partner
church on the Philippines):
“Through the sacrificial help of the body of Christ we
were able to help over 700 families (4000+ people) in the 3 provinces.
We also helped build 3 houses of Alliance church members destroyed
by the typhoon with the help of volunteer Alliance Biblical Seminary
students. Food, clothing, medicines, blankets, etc. were distributed
to members of our churches and others.
Church president Dr. Joe Dalino
describes the situation: “I was shocked to see the devastation,
caused by flood waters and strong winds especially in Tongohin (where
300 people died or are reported missing) and saddened as I listened
to the stories of survivors from that village.” The team was
received with tears as people lined up to receive food aid.” Teams
preach about the love of God and demonstrate it by giving relief aid.
Visited was also Infanta on an island where 600 people died and hundreds
are still missing. The town proper was deserted covered with mud about
3 to 5 meters high. Dalino: “I can only imagine of the grace
of God upon our team. Thank you for praying for us. We will still continue
with the rehabilitation of houses destroyed by typhoons.” |
