The AWF is a
consultative fellowship uniting 45 national churches and representing over
2.4 million inclusive members and 14,500 churches. It grew out of regional
conferences beginning in 1955 in Asia and organized formally in 1975 in
Nyack, New York. It meets every four years in a different part of the
world. The last quadrennial was held in 2000 in Hong Kong.
Founded originally
for mutual encouragement and counsel in developing strong national
churches, the fellowship grew increasingly concerned about the world
evangelization. The first executive director, dr. Benjamin P. de Jésus,
was elected in 1991 during the quadrennial conference in Côte d'Ivoirre,
West Africa.
In 2000, during
the quadrennial in Hong Kong, it was decided to give a more important role
to the different world-regions. The AWF Executive Committee consists of
the Regional Coordinators who were elected in Hong Kong.
